Dr Geant Chuma Basimine is a geographer and a researcher at the University of Liège, affiliated with the LAPLEC (Laboratory for the Analysis of Places, Landscapes and European Countryside). His research focuses on the transformation of European rural landscapes, with a particular focus on the role of water bodies such as agricultural ponds. The project, funded by the Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS), examines, among other things, the social significance of these features, the perception of ecosystem services and the governance mechanisms that influence their operation.
The fieldwork, which allows for direct observation of the scale of drought in Poland and its impact on agricultural activities is a particularly important element of the visit. Analyses conducted in the field also highlight the importance of small-scale water retention – including agricultural ponds – as a key tool in mitigating the effects of environmental change.
The researcher's stay in Łódź is a part of his broader international research activities spanning various countries. During his visit, he conducts data analysis, cartographic and archival research, as well as fieldwork, which allows him to deepen his understanding of the functioning of rural landscapes in Poland.
As part of his visit, Dr Geant Chuma Basimine has also engaged in teaching, leading MA courses on the challenges of sustainable rural development, with particular reference to the experiences of regions in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The visit highlights the importance of research internationalisation and the role of alliances such as UNIC in building lasting European networks of academic cooperation.
